It's a Long Way to the Top

Ok I thought that might look like a strange heading for a blog, but after ripping my ears out at the AC/DC concert two nights ago, the old classic song has been running through my head. I have to say, for a band that has been pumping out hits since the early 70’s, AC/DC put on a stellar show. Lead guitarist Angus young still holds the audience captivated and front man, Brian Johnston still screams with the best of them. Angus has aged since I first saw the band in 1985 (now I am showing my age) and again in 1991, but I tell you what, they rocked hard. It was a great night and really entertaining. I had a ball after a solid weeks training. It was great to unwind and enjoy some legends of rock perform. Great stuff.

It has been a very hectic few weeks. I have been getting the training done here in Australia for my first race of the season at Ironman China in two weeks time. This is the earliest in a year I have ever done an Ironman, and if the conditions are anything like last year, I am in for a really tough day. I have been asked numerous times, “Why Ironman China.” The answer for me simply is I enjoyed last years event and really wanted to do a low key Ironman that I could relax and enjoy without the huge hype of the events I do in Europe and Hawaii. Ironman China will allow me to take some chances on nutrition and really test myself on a different level. I am spending a lot of time in Asia now and enjoying watching the sport boom here. China will be a great experience and a very interesting country to visit.  If I win here in China it will be my 12th Ironman title, which is a record for men, so this is a bit of added incentive. I also find the country of China fascinating, and I will be checking out the Great Wall and Shanghai on my trip.

After China I am returning to Singapore with my family. I just spent 1 week in Singapore taking our first MaccaX camp for the year. It was a huge success and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. We knocked over some serious miles in Malaysia and then did some sound sessions in Singapore. It was great hanging out with everyone, and it was a nice experience. I have decided to return to Singapore after the Ironman in China to raise some awareness for my foundation MaccaNow. We are raising money for Breast Cancer this year, and I am committed to raising a minimum of 150000 dollars this year to help fight the disease. It has really given me a purpose to my racing, and I just wish some of the other professional athletes would jump aboard and race for a purpose.  It feels so satisfying. I am so pumped about it, and the support I have got from so many of the companies out there has been really encouraging. Breast Cancer is a disease that is very close to me. My mother passed away from the disease 10 years ago this year and at the young age of 51. Now I live in a family of girls I just hope that this is a disease we can ultimately fight and cure. My mother was the only female in a house of 3 boys and the disease took her from us. It is a disease that is fought by women, but as men we lose our sisters, mothers, daughters and wives. NOW is an acronym we used for the phrase “ No Opportunity Wasted”, but more so we have adopted the slogan “ Not Only Women.” This is a disease, that as men, we can help fight. It is not a women’s only disease. It affects everyone on different levels and I think that as men this is sometimes lost.  I wanted to do something more as a man to help fight this disease and MaccaNow was the beginning of my journey down this path. I feel great for it and committed to doing what I can.

I have organized a Spin class at Fitness First in Singapore and we are looking at raising in excess of 12000 dollars for our cause and donating the money to the Breast Cancer Foundation of Singapore during the week I am there.  The night is set for 16th March 2010 and we are selling bikes in the spin class. We have 56 bikes to sell for a 90- minute session with myself, and Fitness First will match dollar for dollar all the money we raise. It is going to be awesome. Minimum bike cost is 100 dollars so pop by if you’re in the area. It is going to be a fun night, get some hard work done and we will raise some serious coin for a great charity. We have a Q and A after the session so prepare for a great couple of hours.  Contact Nicole@BPM-Sport.com to book your seat now.

Ok, that’s about all I have to write about for now. Sorry for the long blog. I went off tangent a bit. I am getting ready to hit a big bike session tomorrow before I begin my drop down taper for Ironman China next week. Only 14 days until my first race of the year. Trust me to pick a tough one.

Enjoy your journey,

Macca
